Changes Rehab

Carmen has worked for Changes since 2012 and, before that, she has worked in various roles in the addiction treatment industry for 11 years. She is experienced in treating both drug and alcohol addictions as well as process addictions such as gambling and sex. She is also experienced in helping clients with a history of complex trauma.

Carmen is well-versed in treating addicts with co-occurring mental illnesses.

She has a special interest in animals, having volunteered for a number of charities including at ReWild Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Phalaborwa.

She uses this love for animals in her work, providing clients with equine-assisted therapy at River Manor with the help of the resident horse Snowbell.

Clients Questions

What kind of cases does Carmen tend to work with at Changes?

Carmen often works with families and individuals caught between deep loyalty and deep hurt, where addiction has been normalised for years and everyone is unsure how to change without blowing everything up.

How does she support partners who feel split between love and resentment?

She helps them name both feelings honestly, understand trauma bonding and make decisions based on safety and values rather than fear of being alone or judged.

What can you expect from Carmen in terms of boundaries and honesty?

She is warm but not soft on the illness, and she will challenge both the person using and the family when their behaviour undercuts the recovery they say they want.

How does she bring practical planning into emotional work?

Carmen translates big emotional insights into concrete changes in money, routines, communication and contact, because without those shifts, even the most powerful session fades within days.

How does Carmen help families move from chaos management to long term change?

She works with them to end constant crisis firefighting, set sustainable limits and build their own lives back up, so the addiction is no longer the main organising force in the home.
