What To Expect In Inpatient Rehab

what to expect in rehab.

Coming into inpatient rehab can be daunting at first. Substance abuse is not something that develops overnight – it has a progression and a process; treatment is quite like this.

Taking the first step and admitting a problem is the hardest part of the process. At Changes, we recognise that the disease of addiction is chronic and treat it with a holistic approach with individualised rehab programs to suit patients’ specific needs. Recovery is possible, and your loved ones are in safe hands.

Intake and Assessment

Upon arriving at Changes, you’ll be greeted by a friendly recovery assistant who will guide you through the admissions forms and answer any questions that you may have regarding detox and addiction treatment.

The forms will cover the following:

  • Medical Aid Details
  • Family Contacts
  • Medical History
  • Different Drug Dependencies

You’ll be asked to sign a consent form permitting us to contact those individuals you have written down. Afterwards, you’ll hand over any electronics in your possession that will go into a safe for your stay. The bags you take with you to your room will go through a thorough inspection, and you will be searched for any possessions that might be harmful.

A residential treatment facility can be intimidating when you are new, but rest assured, 24-hour care is available.

We will familiarise you with our inpatient drug rehab, community, and culture by introducing you to our addiction treatment key concepts and goals:

  • Twelve-step recovery program.
  • The impact of addiction: socially, physically, and emotionally.
  • The importance of post-rehab care.

Community Guidelines

During your stay at Changes Addiction Rehab, you will have to adhere to a list of community guidelines:

  • Patients are not to consume any mood or mind-altering substances.
  • No acts of violence will be tolerated between patients or against a staff member, and the patient responsible will be discharged immediately.
  • Theft will not be tolerated.
  • Sexual intimacy between patients/staff members will not be tolerated.
  • Patients must attend all therapeutic groups, sessions, and daily inpatient rehab program activities.

Detox and Substance Abuse Withdrawal Process

Medically assisted detoxification is crucial for individuals with an extensive history of alcohol and drug abuse, those with underlying medical conditions, and those who are suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms. The primary goal of a medical detox is to prioritise the safety and well-being of the individual undergoing withdrawal while in a safe and contained environment.

The detox is the first stage of inpatient rehab treatment; a properly managed detoxification process increases the chances of long-term sustainable recovery,

It is important to note that while detox is an essential first step in addiction treatment, it does not equal recovery and should instead be seen as the pre-requisite to the next phase of treatment and recovery.

Residential Addiction Treatment Program

Changes Addiction Rehab is a drug and alcohol rehab that employs an integrated therapeutic approach to addiction treatment. The length of stay largely depends on a patient’s medical aid benefits and the progression of their illness.

Inpatient care is an intense phase of treatment aimed at stripping away layers of denial related to the disease of addiction and how it manifests in an individual. These core therapeutic methods are included in our approach:

Our facility has 24-hour security to ensure the safety and care of your loved ones at all times. Nutritious meals are served three times daily, with coffee and tea in the interim. Specialised diets are catered for patients who need them.

During your stay at our primary care facility, your allocated counsellor will work closely to help you identify your goals and plan for the next steps. The length of your stay will be based on your progress, specific situation, and goals.

Generally, inpatient treatment lasts between 21-24 days.

In our approach, the family is involved and will influence the final decision on your stay at our inpatient rehab.

A New Found Freedom

Rehab is one of the most challenging experiences an individual can undergo. There will be periods during your stay when you feel “uncomfortable,” and it might feel overwhelming; this is entirely normal. Welcome to a new you!

Inpatient treatment is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Learning to sit with your feelings and embody your authentic self will build self-esteem and self-confidence; as this unravels, the feelings of uncomfortable sensations will dissipate.

Confronting your innermost self takes courage and the willingness to change even more. However, if uncomfortable feelings persist for long periods, you should inform the clinical team so that they may help you with the tools and resources available.

Post Inpatient Rehab

Your true recovery begins when you step outside the gates of inpatient rehab treatment. This is where you will apply the tools you learned during your stay to real-life situations.

Through statistics and experience, we have learned that the best rate of success and strength of your recovery are directly related to following the suggestions recommended after you leave.

This plan could include any/and all of the following:

  • Secondary Care
  • Halfway House
  • Outpatient
